Marvel’s “Secret Invasion” Not So Secret : Fury Hints At Production

2021 has seen Marvel fire on all cylinders, releasing a plethora of MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) series and movies such as (“WandaVision”,”Shang-Chi!”, “Black Widow”, “Loki”). However, one character has been conspicuously missing; Samuel L. Jackson’s “Nick Fury”. This is a character Jackson has portrayed in 11 MCU films so far, with the last being at the end of “Spider-Man: Far From Home”. Nevertheless, things seem to be turning around. “Secret Invasion” will be the twenty-first television series in the MCU, and an installment of Phase Four.

Two days ago, the 66-year-old actor posted a photo on Instagram with the caption, “Time to get back in the groove. Happy to be back on the attack! #secretinvasion”. In the photo, Jackson is wearing a shirt of “Nick Fury” dissolving to dust from the end of “Avengers: Infinity War”(2018), possibly hinting that filming is underway for “Secret Invasion”.

In early September this year during an interview with Collider “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”, producer Jonathan Schwartz revealed that: “I’m currently working on a show called “Secret Invasion”, and then developing another feature that I can say literally nothing about.” Asked if it had started shooting, he went on to say, “I can say literally nothing about it. It’s a secret except that it exists. It’s called Secret Invasion, and it’s a secret.” But now it seems the secretive project is not so secretive, with Jackson spilling the beans via his post.

Rumors of a possible Nick Fury movie were making rounds even before Disney decided to expand its empire by branching out into the streaming realm. Now it finally seems “Fury” will be one of the major players on this new series. Marvel’s official description of the film is: “[Secret Invasion] showcases a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls who have been infiltrating Earth for years.” Ben Mendelsohn (“Captain Marvel” ) will reprise his role as the green-skinned Skrull “Talos”, alongside an excellent incoming cast that includes Olivia Colman(“The Father”), Emilia Clark (“Game of Thrones”), and Kingsley Ben-Adir (“One Night In Miami”), who’s reported to play some kind of villainous role. The series will be head-written by “Mr. Robot” veteran Kyle Bradstreet, and directed by Thomas Bezucha (“The Good House”) and Ali Selim (“Sweet Land”).

In the MCU, we’ve seen the Skrulls play a friendly role in Captain Marvel and other MCU projects, so it remains to be seen what approach this show will take with the characters or storyline. Skrulls first appeared in the MCU in 2019’s “Captain Marvel.” Since then, Skrulls also appeared in end-credits scenes for “Spider-Man: Far From Home” and “WandaVision.”
